Changes to upgrades with miles
Get ready for a new way to upgrade with AAdvantage® miles using Instant Upgrade, available starting June 12, 2025. Instant Upgrade offers a modern, convenient way to request greater comfort and amenities on your flight.
With the launch of Instant Upgrade with miles, new requests using the mileage upgrade award chart will no longer be accepted starting August 12, 2025, at midnight CT.
Instant Upgrade
Instant Upgrade is a convenient way to use your miles or cash to move up to a higher cabin when eligible seats are available.
You can use Instant Upgrade if:
- You’re on an American Airlines marketed and operated flight or American Eagle® flight
- You bought your ticket within the 50 U.S. states
Instant Upgrade with miles will become available to more countries soon.
Benefits
- Instant confirmation: When Instant Upgrade is available for your preferred cabin, your seat will be confirmed right away.
- More options: You can move up to Premium Economy, in addition to Flagship® Business and more.
- Easy to request: You can request an Instant Upgrade on your own – no need to call us.
- No co-payment*: You won’t need to pay a cash co-payment for Instant Upgrade with miles.
How to request
Instant Upgrade is easy to request on your own:
- If you're using cash: Find your trip on aa.com or in the American app before departure.
- If you're using miles: Find your trip on aa.com up to 24 hours before departure (app coming soon).
If an upgrade-eligible seat is available, you'll have the option to upgrade. If you don’t see an offer for Instant Upgrade, it’s not available for that flight.

Mileage upgrade award updates
You can request mileage upgrade awards through August 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT. Starting August 12, 2025, at midnight CT, new requests using the mileage upgrade award chart will no longer be accepted.
Existing mileage upgrade awards
Rest assured we’ll still honor your confirmed mileage upgrades. We’ll also continue working to confirm your waitlisted requests.
New mileage upgrade requests
Travel must be completed by December 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. CT for new requests made from now until August 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT.
Change or cancel existing mileage upgrades
June 12 through August 11, 2025
You can make changes to existing requested or confirmed mileage upgrade awards until August 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT. If you need to cancel, contact Reservations as you would today. The cash co-payment will not be refunded.
If you make a change, travel must be completed by December 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CT, regardless of when you first requested your upgrade.
After August 12, 2025, at midnight CT
No changes can be made. To cancel your mileage upgrade, contact Reservations. For confirmed mileage upgrades, we’ll reinstate your miles, but the cash co-payment will not be refunded.
If you’d like to request an upgrade on your new flight, you can find your trip online and try Instant Upgrade.

With our new sustainable fuel choice, carbon offsets will no longer be a Loyalty Point Reward choice in the 2025 membership year.

**On a lifecycle basis
Create your preferred travel experience with Enhance with Miles. Once you qualify for status, you have the opportunity to redeem miles for exclusive benefits. In 2025, you’ll have new options available:
- AAdvantage Gold® status and above: World of Hyatt Category 1-4 Free Night Award up to 4 times during the AAdvantage® status membership year.
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro® status and above: World of Hyatt Category 1-7 Free Night Award up to 4 times during the AAdvantage® status membership year.
Plus, you'll continue to have these existing Enhance with Miles opportunities:
- A higher AAdvantage® status for a day
- Gifting status to another member for a day
- Flagship® First Dining Passes to enjoy an elevated sit-down dining experience inside the Flagship® Lounge.
Enjoy higher status with select Million Miler™ levels. To reward the loyalty of our most frequent fliers, we’ve added new lifetime status levels:
- Fly 4 million miles for lifetime* AAdvantage Platinum Pro® status
- Fly 5 million miles for lifetime* AAdvantage Executive Platinum® status
*For the life of the AAdvantage Platinum Pro® or AAdvantage Executive Platinum® programs.
Now you have more time to use systemwide upgrades and can manage them online.
More time to use systemwide upgrades
Systemwide upgrades are valid through the status membership year, which begins when you reach status and lasts through March 31 of the following full year. This means you'll have more time to use your systemwide upgrades.
For Loyalty Point Reward choices
The sooner you choose a systemwide upgrade as a reward, the longer you have to use it.
For example: If you unlock a Loyalty Point Reward on March 1, 2025, and choose a systemwide upgrade anytime between March 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, that systemwide upgrade will remain valid until March 31, 2027.
For Million Miler™ status holders
Once you earn 2 Million Miler™ status or higher, you can use your systemwide upgrades from the time you earn them through the status membership year.
For example: Systemwide upgrades will be valid through March 31, 2027 if you earn them from reaching 2 Million Miler™ status or higher between March 1, 2025 and February 28, 2026.
Existing systemwide upgrades
We've extended any systemwide upgrades you earned during the 2024 status qualification year (between March 1, 2024 and February 28, 2025). Any systemwide upgrades you earn as a Loyalty Point Reward or through Million Miler™ status during that time frame will now become valid through March 31, 2026.

AAdvantage® status members can now request and confirm systemwide upgrades on aa.com and the American app.
New ways to use miles

Aer Lingus
Today you can enjoy more benefits when you fly on Aer Lingus as an AAdvantage® status member:
- Priority boarding, check-in and security
- Lounge access
- Free checked bags
You can keep earning AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points when you fly on Aer Lingus. Later on, you'll be able to use your miles for flights.

Today you can earn AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points when flying with JetSMART, and soon you’ll be able to use your miles on flights.
